(1987). New York: Grosset & Dunlap.

ISBN: 978-448089645

Reading Level: Grades 3-5

Summary: Joe and Frank Hardy are your average brothers. They like to play sports, drive their motorcycles, and hang out with their girlfriends. They are also great at solving mysteries. When the father of their friend is accused of stealing by his wealthy employer, Joe and Frank decide they will help clear his name. With the help of their private detective father, they search for clues to find who really was responsible for robbing the Tower House.

Review: The Hardy boys is a classic mystery series for tweens. While it can be considered a bit old fashioned in its writing style (and not as ‘pc’ as many newer titles out) the mysteries are just complicated enough to draw in younger readers. The first book in the series is both easy to read and fast paced. It makes the reader imagine they too could solve a mystery just like Joe and Frank. This book was chosen to be party of the mystery collection because the Hardy Boys have already demonstrated they have stood the test of time. These books are popular today, especially with boys, as the counterpart to Nancy Drew. They will continue to remain a prime example of a successful mystery book for tweens which is why it was included in this collection.
